Loneliness Increases Risk of Dementia

Loneliness is a known factor in depression, but now researchers have discovered that loneliness may also increase risk of dementia in the elderly by 60%.

The study involved 1,200 seniors over 75 years old in Stockholm, Sweden. The researchers questioned participants about their age, education, mental health, diseases, and social networks. After three years, 176 subjects had been diagnosed with dementia, and researchers were able to pinpoint a link between poor social interaction and dementia later in life.

"We have to rethink the health organization of the elderly," said Dr. Laura Fratiglioni, "giving them the possibility for contact and interaction if they do not have families and friends."
