Symptoms to Heed

Elaine Alpert, M.D., M.P.H., of Boston University School of Medicine points out some symptoms that should never be ignored. Anyone who experiences any of the following should notify a physician as soon as possible:

  • Continuing weight loss:
Unintentional loss of 10 or more lbs.;
  • Persistent headaches:
Headaches so severe that over-the-counter pain killers don’t help;
  • Chest pain:
A dull, pressure-like chest pain that comes on for no apparent reason;
  • Abdominal pain:
Incessant or recurring pain should not be passed off as "indigestion;"
  • Bruises and bleeding:
Rectal bleeding, blood in urine, or vaginal bleeding after menopause;
  • Depression:
Sadness or irritability for more than two weeks (could also include spontaneous crying spells, unexplained aches and pains; or lack of concentration.)
