Get Answers From Attorney Before Divorce Is Completed
Q: Since going through my divorce, I have wanted to get some advice about a number of things that I feel were not cleared upQ: Since going through my divorce, I have wanted to get some advice about a number of things that I feel were not cleared up. I have called several lawyers, but I can't seem to get past the secretary to make an appointment because I can't describe any specific problem. I just want to find a lawyer who will take the time to sit down with me to talk about some planning I think I need. Any ideas? A: When you think you may be getting an infection or the flu, it is best to see the doctor for preventive medicine rather than wait until you get really sick and have an emergency. Likewise, it is best to try to find a lawyer who can advise you about your "legal health" before you actually need one. Lawyers are trained to help clients in many ways--not just when you get sued: As negotiators they can help you settle disputes out of court; as advocates, they safeguard your rights; and as counselors, they offer impartial advice when you need it. It may be best to seek out a lawyer who does more of an office practice than a litigation practice. Get references from your friends, bankers, others you trust, the telephone book, or the local bar association. When you call for an appointment, tell the receptionist that you need an hour appointment with the lawyer to discuss personal matters with the lawyer. If you still cannot get an appointment, write the lawyer a letter and tell him or her that you have had a hard time getting in to see him or her. And don't forget to ask about the fees for this consultation. Jan Warner is a matrimonial, tax, and elder law attorney. Jan Collins Stucker is an award-winning writer.
