Edwin C. Schilling III

The law offices of Edwin C. Schilling III, P.C. concentrates in advising domestic relations lawyers nation-wide on the division and valuation of federal and corporate pensions incident to divorce. He has assisted in over 1000 cases in all 50 states.

As Assistant Staff Judge Advocate of the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, Lieutenant Colonel Schilling approved or denied more than 6,000 cases involving the division or garnishment of military retired pay and civil service pay.

Edwin Schilling has given more than 100 nationwide presentations on dividing and valuing pensions, including Continuing Legal Education programs sponsored by various state bars, the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and Professional Education Systems, Incorporated. He has also testified as an expert witness in numerous cases across the nation, and his valuations have been used by counsel in over 30 states. In 1995 his valuation methodology of two pensions was upheld by the Alaska Supreme Court.

As part of his 20-year career in the Air Force, Colonel Schilling served as the judge advocate representative to the Air Force team in 1981 that prepared draft legislation and testimony for Senate hearings during the legislative process that culminated in the passage of the Uniformed Services Former Spouses' Protection Act (USFSPA). He was also Associate Professor of Law, Department of Law, United States Air Force Academy and Director, Air Force Legal Assistance and Preventive Law Programs.

He is the co-author of the books The Survival Manual for Women in Divorce and The Survival Manual for Men in Divorce and the video tape and manual How to Successfully Manage Military Divorce. In April, 1990 he testified before Congress on behalf of the American Bar Association concerning proposed amendments to federal pension legislation.

Edwin Schilling is a member of the Family Law Sections of the American, Colorado and Louisiana Bar associations. He serves as an Executive Member of the Federal Legislation and Procedures Committee of the ABA Family Law Section, and is Chairman of the Military Retired Pay Subcommittee. He is a graduate of the College for Financial Planning. Edwin is admitted to practice in Alaska, Colorado and Louisiana and before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Military Appeals, Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, United States Court of Claims and United States Tax Court. He received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Physics from Baylor University, and his law degree from Louisiana State University Law School, where he was Associate Editor of the Law Review and inducted into the Order of the Coif.
